The Development and Future of China's Semiconductor Industry

A delegation from the China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA) headed by its president, Mr. Zhongyu Yu, visited Stanford University on November 5, 2005. As part of its visit on campus, the delegation was invited to speak at SPRIE's seminar series on the rise of China's innovation competence. Mr. Yu and his colleagues shared with the audience the latest developments in China's integrated circuit (IC) industry as well as their understanding of the underlying driving forces, the level of competency, the role of the government and China's integration into the global innovation system. Integrated Circuit Development in Globalization - A China Experience

On November 1, 2005, SPRIE invited Jimmy Lee, Vice President and General Manager, Timing Solutions, Integrated Device Technology (IDT) to speak at SPRIE's seminar series on the rise of China in innovation. Lee shared his experience in running a full-blown integrated circuit (IC) product development center in China together with an informative account of China's rise in the IC industry. Read more »

From California Dreaming to Silicon Success: The Rise of China's Semiconductor Industry

On October 18, 2005, SPRIE presented the next seminar in its 2005-2006 series on "Greater China and the Globalization of R&D" with speaker Dr. Doug Fuller, current SPRIE Fellow. Dr. Fuller, speaking on "From California Dreaming to Silicon Success: The Rise of China's Semiconductor Industry," presented both industry-wide data and case studies of individual firms to explain how the politics of finance in China shape which Chinese chip firms become fast learners able to compete in world markets and which ones remain technological laggards. +PDF+ presentation available

Challenges and Realities of Software Development in China

On October 4, 2005, SPRIE kicked off its 2005-2006 seminar series on "Greater China and the Globalization of R&D" with guest speaker Dr. Leonard Liu, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Augmentum. In his talk, titled "Challenges and Realities of Software Development in China," Liu shared his view of the software industry in China as well as his experience at Augmentum. Selected by Red Herring in September 2005 as one of top 100 private companies of Asia, Augmentum is a value-added software development services company that has grown in two years to more than 450 people worldwide, 90% of them at Augmentum's development facility in Shanghai. SPRIE co-director Henry S. Rowen testifies before U.S.-China Commission

On April 21, Henry S. Rowen offered testimony - based on SPRIE's work in China - to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. Created in 2000, the twelve-member Commission is charged to monitor, investigate, and submit to Congress an annual report on the national security implications of the bilateral trade and economic relationship between the United States and China, including recommendations for legislative action. Next generation leaders in the semiconductor industry: Chinese professionals discuss their location decisions

Greater China has emerged as the most rapidly growing region in the semiconductor industry. Domestic and overseas Chinese professionals play increasingly important roles for the region's development. SPRIE and Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) cooperated with the Chinese-American Semiconductor Professional Association (CASPA) to assess the perspectives of overseas Chinese professionals in Greater China's IC industry, and to explore factors influencing their movement decisions. On September 7 and 8, 2004, SPRIE hosted 35 scholars and government leaders from Silicon Valley, Hsinchu, and Beijing for an intensive two-day workshop to discuss the models and best practices of linking universities, research institutes, and industry to facilitate innovation and entrepreneurship in the U.S., Taiwan, and Mainland China. SPRIE Research Fellows

As part of this new initiative on innovation and entrepreneurship in Greater China, SPRIE will select outstanding Stanford students as the inaugural SPRIE Research Scholars. SPRIE Research Scholars will work with SPRIE faculty and senior researchers at Stanford for two (or more) academic quarters in 2005 to gather and analyze data, conduct interviews in Silicon Valley, contribute to publications, and advance progress on the overall project agenda. Visit from Taipei Mayor

FSI Stanford News

Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou gave his only public address in Silicon Valley at Stanford University, hosted by the Stanford Project on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SPRIE). Following a welcome by Stanford Provost John Etchemendy, Dr. Ma spoke to a packed house about Taipei's Changing Role in Global IT Industries on August 26, 2003. Mayor Ma has had a distinguished career of government service, and in 2001 was re-elected as Taipei mayor in a landslide. Read more »
